NMC warns against admissions to 4 foreign medical colleges for not meeting Indian healthcare quality standards.
Non-compliance with FMGL Regulations can jeopardise medical registration of students in India.
Embassy reports reveal grave issues like poor education, infrastructure, and harassment at these institutions.
Students must verify recognition and guidelines on the NMC website before applying to any foreign medical college.
On Monday, July 22, 2025, the National Medical Commission (NMC) issued a strong advisory urging Indian students not to take admission in four specific foreign medical colleges, three in Central America (Belize) and one in Uzbekistan.
The warning is serious: students graduating from these institutions will be ineligible for medical registration in India under the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations, 2021.
The following institutions have been flagged as non-compliant with Indian medical education standards:
Country | Medical College Name |
---|---|
Belize (Central America) | 1. Central American Health and Sciences University, Belize |
2. Columbus Central University, Belize | |
3. Washington University of Health and Sciences, Belize | |
Uzbekistan | 4. Chirchik Branch of Tashkent State Medical University |
This alert came after serious concerns were raised by:
Indian Embassy in Mexico
Eurasia Division of the Ministry of External Affairs
These institutions were found to be:
Not meet the FMGL Regulations, 2021
Lack adequate or functioning campus and clinical infrastructure
Deliver poor quality education and clinical training
Reported harassment of Indian students
Charge excessive fees and refuse refunds on course withdrawal
As per NMC’s Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021, any foreign MBBS program must:
Be at least 54 months (4.5 years) long
Include 12 months of internship in the same country
Be taught in English
Have curriculum and clinical training equivalent to Indian MBBS
Be a full-time, on-campus program
Any deviation from these leads to disqualification from registration in India.
This isn’t the first time the NMC has sounded the alarm:
Date | Advisory Issued On |
---|---|
8 August 2023 | First public alert against non-compliant foreign colleges |
22 November 2024 | Reminder and updated list of non-compliant institutions |
19 May 2025 | General advisory on foreign medical education and FMGL rules |
22 July 2025 | Specific advisory against 4 foreign medical colleges |
Despite multiple advisories, many Indian students continue to apply to unsafe and unrecognized foreign medical colleges.
Here’s how to safeguard your medical career:
Check if the university is recognized and FMGL-compliant via:
NMC’s Official Website
Indian Embassy in the respective country
UGMEB alerts and advisories
Already enrolled? Reassess urgently:
Does your university meet FMGL Regulations?
If not, consider transferring (if possible) or legal counseling.
Stay away from institutions with:
No clinical hospital tie-ups
Vague curriculum info
Low-quality infrastructure
No mention of FMGE/NExT preparation or Indian standards
If you study at any of the above-listed colleges:
Impact Area | Consequence |
---|---|
FMGE/NExT Eligibility | Not eligible to appear |
Indian Registration | Degree won’t be accepted in India |
Clinical Training | Substandard and may not count legally |
Legal Recourse | No support from Indian authorities |
Future Prospects | Major risk to time, money, and career |
“Students must ensure their chosen foreign medical institution complies with the FMGL Regulations, 2021. Any lapse will affect their eligibility for screening tests and registration in India.”
— Sukh Lal Meena, Director, UGMEB, NMC
When choosing a college in another country, it is important to check everything about the college. Because we are putting everything for a degree and that too in another country. So, before taking admission, ensure that the university:
Meets NMC’s FMGL 2021 guidelines
Has proper clinical infrastructure
Is officially recognized by Indian authorities
One wrong decision can cost you your eligibility to practice in India. So take your time, ask the right questions, consult verified sources, and only proceed once you’re confident about the college.
