Is NEET compulsory to study MBBS abroad in 2025?

Introduction

Can you imagine… out of 23 lakh NEET UG aspirants, only 118190 students are able to secure seats for top government and private medical colleges. You can just see the difficulty level of this exam now. But don’t worry. There’s always a plan B. Countries like Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Australia, Kazakhstan, Bangladesh and the Philippines offer a far more affordable option than India. Yes, you heard it right. The fees are (literally) one-fifth of what MBBS costs in India. Sounds exciting? We get it. However, there’s one very important step that you have to clear. The NEET UG exam. You don’t need to score excellent marks; even the bare minimum works. Universities just need a valid NEET score for MBBS admission abroad.

NEET UG 2025 Guidelines: All You Need To Know

The Supreme Court of India has mandated to qualify for the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) to study MBBS abroad. The National Medical Commission (NMC) is the regulatory council of this exam. Without a NEET qualification prior to enrolment abroad, your degree will not be recognised.

Indians who want to study MBBS abroad in 2025 must compulsorily comply with the norms laid by NMC. The following criteria should be met mandatorily:

  • NEET UG qualification: Passing the NEET UG exam is mandatory before applying abroad.

  • Accredited institution: Ensure that you choose a medical college or university which is approved by the regulatory body or the national council of a particular country

  • Course duration: The minimum duration of an MBBS course should be 54 months, with an additional 12-month clinical internship.

  • Licensure exam: Qualify for the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) or NExT (from 2025) when you are back in India in order to practice medicine legally.

How to Navigate through the NEET UG Preparation to Study Abroad?

NEET is not your barrier to pursuing a medical career abroad. It ensures uniformity and quality preparation before you go abroad. When you are outside the country, you are directly/indirectly representing your home country. Remember three important points:

  • Start early with NEET preparation: NEET is important, not just if you are studying medicine and surgery in India, but qualifying for it will also enable you to study abroad.

  • Do your homework: When you are looking for universities abroad, ensure that it is approved by the NMC and other regulatory bodies.

  • Stay updated: Legal mandates like Supreme Court rulings and NMC guidelines can change. Keep tabs on announcements to avoid last-minute hassles.
